Packaging Tech

Reports to: Packaging Lead
Additional Report: Production Manager, Director of Operations, Brewmaster
Pay Range: $17-20 commensurate with experience
A Smog City Packaging Tech’s main role is to package beer efficiently and uphold the highest quality standards of finished product. They have good attention to detail and ability to work in a clean, organized and efficient way to accomplish assigned tasks. Primary Responsibilities
Package and rack beer into kegs
- Rack finished beer into kegs
- Assist in operation of wild goose packaging lines and perform pack off duties.
- Assist in all pre- and post-packaging operations including case building, labeling, package filling and palletizing.
Warehousing
- Receive raw materials and packaging supplies.
- Operate a forklift safely following safety protocols.
- Maintain a safe, clean and organized workspace.
Keg Washing
- Lots of it, it’s important.
- Wash kegs using a premier stainless keg washer. Keep equipment clean and keg area orderly.
Data recording
- Use paper logs, spreadsheets, procedural checklists, and production software to record data related to all above.
General Expectations
- Maintain the operational efficiency and safety of the equipment you use. Catch it before it breaks, fix it if you can, bring it to someone’s attention if you can’t.
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of equipment and brewery at all times.
- Work hard and efficiently to ensure Smog City beer maintains quality standards into the package.
- Assist in safety compliance and QA/QC.
- Learn and adhere to standard operating and safety procedures.
- Stay organized and communicate effectively
- Note – all staff help out wherever they are needed. The above are guidelines but additional responsibilities may, and most likely will, be required.
Minimum Physical Abilities
- Must be in good physical condition and able to maneuver in confined spaces.
- Must be able to walk, sit, stand, and/or crouch for extended periods of time.
- Must be able & willing to work early morning, daytime, evening and/or weekend shifts.
- Must be able to lift 55 lbs. (malt bag!) to shoulder level repeatedly and maneuver at least 165 lb. (full keg!) containers safely.
Necessary Skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and use your time efficiently.
- Knowledge of the brewing process and how everything you do affects the quality of the beer.
- Excellent beer knowledge, a good sense of smell and taste with the ability to communicate what you are sensing.
- Must be able to follow directions.
- Subject line of the email must read: Seven Sicilian sailors sailing the seven seas.
- Communicate clearly and concisely with respect to all personnel at all levels, in addition to customers.
- Forklift experience is a plus.
Education/Experience
- A minimum of six months of professional experience at a commercial brewery or 3 years of home brewing experience.
- Bachelor’s degree and/or formal brewing education preferred.

Highland Park Brewery in Los Angeles, CA is hiring a full time assistant brewer! We are an adventurous brewery that values the diversity of our Los Angeles community and we want our team to be representative of that.
We specialize in hoppy beers, traditional lagers, and thoughtfully crafted stouts. We also experiment with unique processes and local ingredients among other things. We currently have 2 fully operational breweries: a 7 barrel brewhouse in Highland Park and a 3 vessel 15 barrel brewhouse in Chinatown. Quality is always in the forefront for our brewery. We are a small, tight-knit crew, so you will be involved in every aspect of the brewery from developing and making beers all the way to packaging.

Brewer
Brouwerij West

We are looking for qualified candidates to expand our production, especially those with production brewery or hard seltzer experience and a serious interest in quality. We are also seeking a person who shares our love of traditional Belgian brewing as well as clean lagers, hazy IPA, unique ingredients, dry-hopping techniques, hard seltzer, and an experimental take on brewing and branding. Our brewers execute all aspects of beer production from initial milling to finished product packaging, including quality control. The role requires autonomy, and the ability to oversee our production line and brewhouse staff when our brewmaster and/or director of cellar and packaging are not present during a shift.
Key Job Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Operate all aspects of brewhouse, fermentation and bright tanks, and related equipment.
- Prepare and execute milling, mashing, grain-out, and hopping activities; transfer wort and brite beer; manage required yeast and trub removals.
- Perform clean- in-place (CIP) of brewery equipment, cleaning of mash filter, and cleaning of brewery and cellar areas.
- Operate packaging and labeling lines.
- Perform volume, temperature, gravity, and other production control measurements including necessary calculations, recording information promptly into our production software.
- Communicate and respond to out-of-specification measurements at established points in the brewing and packaging process.
- Maintain cleanliness and orderly function in all parts of the brewhouse, production process, and packaging line.
- Taste beer prior to packaging.
- Assist in the training of production floor colleagues including newly hired employees.
- Work with and support brewmaster, director of brewing operations, and/or director of cellar & packaging on special projects as needed.
- Participate in events, festivals, and other marketing activities, both on- and off-site.
Necessary Job Qualifications & Experience
- Comprehensive knowledge of the beer brewing process, including an understanding of underlying scientific principles governing fermentation and the ability to perform blending and brewing calculations.
- Prior experience in a production brewery setting.
- Attention to detail, especially recording and analyzing quality control data, and experience working independently.
- Great verbal and written communication skills and ability to multi-task as part of a small team, taking ownership of all duties necessary for successful production.
- Experience with CIP, sanitizing principles, fermentation, bottling and canning lines, kegging equipment, and labeling machinery preferred.
- Eagerness to learn and utilize our customized brewing production and accounting software, Orchestrated Beer (based on SAP Business One). Familiarity with Google Suite (Sheets, Docs) and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) programs preferred.
- Desire for career advancement and greater seniority in production process over time.
- Reasonable flexibility of work schedule including the ability to periodically work weekends, evenings, and holidays to meet scheduled production runs.
- Ability to lift and move 55 pounds repeatedly.
- Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time, as well as stoop, crawl, climb and work in tight or active/crowded spaces.
- Willingness to work in all weather conditions.
- Forklift and pallet jack proficiency preferred.
This a full-time, hourly position. We offer pay commensurate with experience for the right candidate, in the range of $22-$30 per hour. Full-time employees receive benefits including medical, dental, and vision insurance, and two weeks paid time off. All employees are allocated beer allowances and company discounts.
